Are there good managers and bad managers? Why yes there is
A man once told me "If your a manager and your employees don't like you, then you're a good manager".
I say not, if your employees don't like you, then most likely production will be and most of your employees will end up leaving to find a different job, why? because they are not happy. People want a job where they are happy, and like their job, It's simple happy employees do better and more work, Happ employees stay at their job, Happy employees work harder.
I have worked many jobs and seen many managers, In a factory, the manager almost never comes out of his office, unless they have a weekly or monthly employee meeting and then they talk about production, how it is going, what he is expecting to be done, some will even talk about delays, and how far behind the plant is behind. it is usually a half-hour talk and then back to work, most plant managers will only know the names of their supervisors and could not tell you any of the employees' names. That's just sad!
I did work in a factory where the plant manager did know everyone, after doing his business in the morning he would come out on the floor and walk around, he would stop at every station a talk to the workers, he called everyone by name, he even knew your families, That factory had the highest production rate, and Why? because the plant manager cared and was friends with all of the employees! anyone can say what they want, they had the lowest turnover rate in the corporation, the highest production rate, and the lowest employee injury rate.
A manager can be friends with the employees, he can care about them and their families. Small businesses have policies that family comes first, take care of your family, family is the most important thing. Most will prove it, tye will be there to help you cover your shift and some will even help you as much as they can.
So if a factory or business tells the manager "hey I don't care about the employees I just want production and results". Does the mean the plant manager or general manager should do what he is told, or can he say okay and then do the opposite and care about his employees instead of making an already rich man even richer?
I work at a culver's restaurant, The owner is a friend of mine, the general manager is my best friend, they both care about their employees, they both say over and over that family or families come first and they say their employees come first and they prove it. They don't just ay it to be nice, they prove it! My general manager does not work Monday through Friday every week and has weekends off, he could, but he doesn't he works weekends, he works nights he will work any shift depending on where we need coverage, he will work your shift or a partial shift to help cover for you if your sick or you have a family member that is sick and you need to be home to help them. he doesn't just sit in the office, he will schedule himself office time for that and even then if we get busy and need help he will come out and help. From the time he gets to work he is out on the floor, he is funny, he likes to joke and make the day better and make the employees have a good day and all he asks is that the employees work while having fun, and when the time comes and we get busy that they step up and do their jobs, get the food out in good time and smile, smile, smile, give the guest a great experience and ake them leave smiling and happy and wanting to come back again, If the employes give a 110% and then he will give back 110% to the employees helping them with time off, work with them on the schedule if they need a day off,
He is a great leader, a great coach, and a great general manager, most of all he is human and understands that people make the business work not just him, that people are human and not just robots that come and work and then leave, they have personalities and feelings and the better you treat them, the better they work. We are the blue crew family, not just friends, but family and we take care of each other and help each other when we are needed and can.
Now that is what you call an awesome manager.
